How to Care For Black Gym Leggings So They Stay Black Longer

Black gym leggings fade faster than most people expect, and in the majority of cases it is not the fabric quality that is to blame. It is the washing. Small changes to how you launder your activewear can make the difference between leggings that stay deeply black for years and ones that turn a washed-out grey within a few months.

The biggest washing mistakes people make

Hot water washes

This is the number one cause of premature fading in black activewear. Hot water causes the dye in synthetic fabrics to release and wash away. It also degrades elastane, which affects both the fit and the opacity of the leggings over time. Most gym leggings do not need a hot wash to come clean. Sweat, body oils, and gym equipment residue all respond well to cold water when combined with a good detergent.

Tumble drying

Heat is the enemy of activewear. Tumble drying breaks down synthetic fibres, shrinks spandex, and accelerates colour fading significantly. It is also completely unnecessary for leggings, which dry quickly when hung or laid flat. If you are regularly tumble drying your gym leggings, this is almost certainly the reason they are fading and losing their shape.

Fabric softener

Fabric softener leaves a coating on synthetic fibres that reduces their ability to wick moisture and breathe. It also degrades the elastane over time and can cause black fabrics to look dull and slightly grey. Skip the softener entirely for all activewear.

Washing with rough fabrics

Washing gym leggings alongside denim, towels, or anything with zips or Velcro creates friction that causes pilling and surface abrasion. Over time this dulls the surface of the fabric and makes the black appear faded even when the dye itself is intact.

How to wash black gym leggings properly

Cold water, gentle cycle or hand wash

Always wash gym leggings on a cold setting, ideally 30 degrees or below. A delicates or gentle cycle is preferable to a standard cycle, as the reduced agitation puts less stress on the fabric. Hand washing in cold water is the gentlest option of all and takes only a few minutes for leggings.

Turn them inside out before washing

Turning leggings inside out reduces friction on the outer surface during the wash cycle, which protects the colour and reduces pilling. It also helps any residual sweat or body oil come into more direct contact with the detergent. Make this a habit for every wash.

Use a sports detergent or colour-protect detergent

Standard detergents are formulated primarily for cotton. A sports-specific detergent is designed to break down sweat and body oils from synthetic fabrics without being aggressive on the fibres or the dye. Alternatively, a colour-protect detergent will help maintain the depth of black. Avoid biological detergents for regular activewear washing, as the enzymes can be harsh on elastane.

Use a mesh laundry bag

A mesh laundry bag is a small investment that makes a real difference. It reduces friction against other items in the drum, protects the fabric surface, and prevents zips or fastenings on other garments from catching on your leggings.

How to dry leggings correctly

Air dry every time. Either hang them up or lay them flat to dry. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can also fade dark fabrics over time. Leggings made from nylon and spandex blends dry quickly at room temperature, so there is no practical reason to use a tumble dryer.

How often should you wash gym leggings?

After every use for any workout involving significant sweat. Bacteria from sweat breaks down synthetic fibres over time if left unwashed, and the odour becomes increasingly difficult to remove the longer it is left. Airing leggings out immediately after wearing will help between washes but is not a substitute for a proper cold wash.

Can faded black leggings be restored?

Fabric dye designed for synthetics can restore some depth of colour, but it is a time-consuming process and the results vary depending on the fabric composition. It is generally more cost-effective to replace faded leggings than to attempt dyeing, unless they are a particularly expensive or beloved pair.
